Task one
For my project I have decided to do the topic off 'Leeds, 2011'
For my project I have decided to do the topic off 'Leeds, 2011'
I have decided to take photographs of the architecture around Leeds, to show despite the negative view that alot of people have of Leeds, it's buildings and people, that it can be quite a interesting place to be.
Here I went out and took a few test shots to get a more clearer idea of what I wanted to do, here are my favourite five.
After having a think about what I was going to do for my final set of images, I decided to have a go at one of the other topics to see where I could go with that, here I used my grandad in the topic of 'person x' and I decided to photograph him doing his favorite thing, playing his cornet at the band room.
I had a look at the photographer Julian Germain's book 'For every minute you are angry, you loose sixty seconds of happiness'
I wanted to take the images in this style, here are some examples of his images.
Task three
Before I came up with my final editing idea of this old photo look, I tried out a black and white look to the images, with a strong contrast. I thought about using the black and white images but I decided I liked my old photo look ones better.
Task Four.
I am really happy with my final images, I think I really managed to create a nice set of images that clearly showed what my grandad was into. I am also really happy with my editing with the old photo look of my photo. I think I need to work on the order off my images a bit so that they could tell a story of what he does and that maybe a few of the images could be cut, like one or two of the sheet music ones as they're quite repetitive. Since I couldn't reproduce more images from this critique I instead tweaked the editing of the images slightly to make them look all alike. I saved the actions in photoshop so I could easily edit all of the photographs with the same look.

Task Two
Julian wanted to document how Charles lived his life and show what he loved, flowers, bright colours, his wife ect. He did this through photographs of both Charles and objects of his lifestyle. This is what I would like to do in my project about my grandad, I plan to take images of both objects and of him. I also like the colours in Julians photographs, I would like to take influence from this style into the editing of my own photographs.
I plan to take images of my grandad using the band room, since it's his life.
Ideas for some of the shots are
-Pictures of sheet music.
-Pictures of the band room
-Pictures of instruments
-Pictures of my grandad playing the instruments
-Pictures with information of the band room.
Since I couldn't get into the band room sooner, since there was a lot of practises on and stuff for christmas, and I had to do some practise shots, I decided that I could have a practise at picking someone else to take pictures for, so I had a better idea of what pictures to take when I got my opportunity in the band room with my grandad.
Here are some pictures I took with my dad as the person x. He loves cars, books and watching films, walking and doing up his camper van, so I decided to take pictures of this.
Task three
Even though I didn't have the opportunity to do practise shots of my chosen final images, I think my practise shots went well still, I think I managed to reproduce the look of Julian's work. I used a filter called 1960's in the editing program picnik, that gave my photos an old effect, I really loved the look of this, and I will do this to my final set of images. I think I managed to communicate well and show what my dad liked very clearly, I tried to do this for the images with my grandad.
Now here are my images that I took with my grandad below.
I also edited the shadow and contrast level of the photograph to darken and contrast it a little. Before I came up with my final editing idea of this old photo look, I tried out a black and white look to the images, with a strong contrast. I thought about using the black and white images but I decided I liked my old photo look ones better.
Then I tried out desaturating the image, I opened up the images in photoshop and went to image adjustments and hue/ saturation. I then pulled the saturation bar right down till there was only a slight bit of colour in the photographs. I saved this action and then repeated it on the other photographs. I did really like the look of this but I didn't like the slight green tint that the images have.
But after trying these out, I still decided that I liked my old photo effect better, so I decided to do that for my final pictures.

Task Five.
Below are my images from when I got my time in the band room.
At first I had a bit of trouble setting up my camera to work the light in the band room, as you can see below, with my under and over exposed images. To correct this I changed my ISO and my shutter speed and took a few practice shots untill I got my proper settings, since the band room had quite low lighting due to the lack of lighting because the windows were only on one side. To take the images of the music sheets I put my camera on macro setting, then for the one of my grandad playing the cornet I used a shallow depth of field so that the background wasn't in focus.
Here are my final images.
(taken out because I didn't think this was one of my strongest images and I wasn't happy with the lighting)
(taken out because I think that the other plaque image gave more information and looked very similar)
For my final prints out, I decided to take a few of the images out, because I felt some of them were a bit repetative. I will mark the ones I have taken out so you can see what my final set are.
After presenting my images to the teacher, I was asked to carry on the tester images that I did about my dad, here are my final images for that :) I decided to edit them in the same style. So I had a big think about all of the things that are my dads hobbies and I came up with, walking, reading, listening to music and doing up his camper van. I decided to also take an image of some of the polaroid images we have of him from when he was little.
Task Six.
Here I had to look into was of presenting my final art work.
Ways I could present my work
* a zine
* printed photographs mounted
* a flip book of photographs
*power point
* All on one sheet of photo paper
With a zine, it would have a specific order in which you'd have to read the image.
The printed out photographs could be put in an order to be read but it would all just depend on where the viewer would look first.
With a power point you'd also have to view the pictures in a certain order.
If I got the images on a big piece of paper, it would be the same as if they were stuck on a wall, it would all depend on how the person views it themself and where they look at the photo first.

I think I like to have my images put into a book, I would order them so that they told a story of what my grandad does, but maybe I could have them printed a bit bigger and put them onto foam board, same for the pictures of my dad.
In the end I decided to have them printed onto photopaper then I will mount them onto foam board and cut them out with a knife, then when my images are displayed they'd be in an order. I will number the back of them so I know what order they need to be stuck on the wall in, and here is a picture of all of my final images in their proper order.
Task seven.
Here is pictures of my final images mounted and in the right order.
Here are the pictures based on my dad.
Task eight.
I am pretty happy with the work I have produced, I learnt some new photoshop things, like how to do something to a photo then save those actions and use them on another, this helped me when I was editing all of my images to look the same. My favourite images were the ones of my grandad, I feel that I really captured how much music and the band room means to him, and I think they're a lovely set of images, I am also really happy with the images I took of my dad, though I do think if I had time I would like to take a few more of him to make it more of a set. The set of images of my grandad could be put into an order, so I plan to do that, but I don't think the ones of my dad could be as they're of different subjects unlike the ones of just music for my grandad. But after having a play around with them I managed to order them. Then with the images of my grandad now ordered (as you can see in the earlier task) I feel as you look at them they tell a story of how he lives his life that is surrounded by music. I couldn't really thing of an order for the images of my dad as they're off lots of different things unlike the ones of my grandad that are more tied together, so I didn't really order them.
I think with all of my set of images I managed to complete the images that I planned in the earlier tasks, I managed to take images of the sheet music, showing what was played there. Showed the venue in which this happens, the band room. I showed my grandad playing his instrument and pictures of the instruments that are in the band room like his also. I also managed to get in some information in a picture about the history of the band room. So I feel that the narrative I have created reads well as I have covered every aspect of what my grandad does. I also feel that I managed to copy the style of my chosen photographer really well as I think they match his old photograph style and the mixture of objects and people really well. I am really glad at first that I did try out one of the other topics because from trying out that, I found out that I had a better plan of what to do with another topic, but I still really like the images that I came out with for my Leeds shots. I think the fact that I explored other topics helped me decide more definately where I really wanted to go with this project.
